If you are fond
of baking at your leisure time, you might have heard of or used edible
glitter. Whether the glitters available at the market are truly edible is
debatable.
Glitter, also
known as disco dust, is a product sometimes used to decorate cakes and other
dessert items. It is generally considered to be a non-toxic element but is not
edible. Disco dust is the same thing as actual glitter, the plastic thing you
get at craft stores. I think it’s safe to say that we are all on the same page
about not ingesting plastic.
Does it mean you
don’t get to decorate your kid’s birthday cake with lots of sparkles they
wanted? Of course not. You can simply make your own edible glitter at home.
In this post, we
have covered an easy way to make glitters at home with 100% edible ingredients.
Ingredients Required
Making edible
glitter is an extremely process. But that’s not the only reason why it’s the
best. Compared to the bulk
price of glitter from the market, home-made edible glitter comes
cheaper while being a healthier option.
Whether you are
an amateur or a professional baker, the ingredients you need for preparing
glitter are probably already available at your home or shop.
What You Need
1. Water (cold)
– ¼ cup
2. Gelatin
powder – 5 tsp
3. A metallic
finish food-grade colour – 1 tsp
You can use any
food-grade colour or dust available around you. But I recommend using good
brands of colours that are completely natural with mica-based pearlescent
pigments. Made with real minerals these pigments are totally safe for
consumption.
Procedure
The base of this
recipe is formed by gelatin sheet. Here powdered gelatin is turned into a sheet
that looks and feels like plastic.
Steps
1. Take a
shallow bowl and pour the cup of cold water into it
2. Add gelatin
powder to the water
3. Let it sit
for 5 minutes
4. Put the
mixture in a double boiler
5. Heat it for
30 seconds, stir to avoid lumping, and keep it in the heat for another 15
seconds until it melts completely. Make sure you do not overheat it.
6. Remove it
from heat and let sit for 5 minutes
7. Skim off the
white froth formed on the top with a spoon and discard
8. Add your
choice of colour to the gelatin and stir to mix evenly
9. Pour the
mixture on a large plastic wrap and smoothen it with a flat brush
10. Let it dry
overnight
11. Break up the
gelatin sheet and grind until it is finely crushed
Et voila! Your edible glitter is ready for
use.
